Teaching and Learning
- Education for the 21st Century
Our students receive a broad and balanced education which we firmly believe will prepare them for life-long learning in the 21st Century. Our school is committed to the ideal that learning should be enjoyable, with well-planned lessons designed to challenge all abilities.
- High Expectations
We have high expectations of students and encourage them to have high expectations of themselves. Our staff use a variety of teaching and learning styles and grouping patterns in order to encourage students to develop their talents and areas of expertise to the full.
- Target Setting
Teachers use frequent assessment of students' work in order to set challenging targets, monitor progress and inform planning. We invest in resources that support and accelerate learning.
- Curriculum Opportunities
The full range of National Curriculum subjects is taught by a team of committed, specialist staff. At Key Stage 4 we offer a wide variety of GCSE courses and vocational opportunities. Students also have the chance to pursue other particular interests and extend their learning beyond the classroom. The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, trips abroad, music tuition and a wide range of sporting activities are just a few examples of the school's extra-curricular provision we provide.
We have excellent links with local post-16 providers and many of our students are able to take advantage of this in order to gain additional qualifications.
- Independent Learning
At George Eliot Community School we believe that homework can play a vital role in raising standards of achievement. Through joint curriculum area tasks which can be accessed on this website, students can develop independent research skills which will prove invaluable for further study and the world of work. We have a well equiped Library Resources Centre and several ICT rooms which will provide valuable resources to help with independent study.

Supporting Our Students
Good relationships between all members of the school community are essential in order to make the individual feel safe and secure. It is in this atmosphere that students succeed.
We aim to make all students feel safe and secure by:
- A strong partnership with our primary schools
Students and their parents are often apprehensive about the move to secondary school. We ensure a smooth transfer by shared visits and induction programmes.
- A strong sense of community
Students are placed in tutor groups on arrival with a carefully chosen Form Tutor. Tutor groups are kept deliberately small giving confidence, friendship and individual attention to each student.
- Keeping in touch with home
Parents are encouraged to form close links with staff and celebrate with us their child's achievement and progress. Our parents appreciate the fact that we keep them so well informed and that they are always welcome in school.
- Discipline
High standards of effort and behaviour can be seen around the school. This is recognised and rewarded. The emphasis is on encouraging self discipline and collective responsibility. Lapses in discipline are dealt with quickly and appropriately. Students and staff are aware of the rules and recognise the fairness of the system.
